SLOBODNE VEZE/LOOSE ASSOCIATIONS LAUNCH
AN OPEN CALL TO EVERYBODY

Nature Study Notes
an experiment in avant-garde music

Zagreb, 14-16.02.2011.
workshop led by Lore Gablier (FR)

Prior to the workshop, participants are invited to choose and collect various objects, either for their musicality or aesthetic quality. It is important to keep in mind that producing images and sounds are equally important when performing these scores.

About the workshop:

The workshop is an introduction to avant-garde music through the exploration of Nature Study Notes, a compilation of scores composed by members of the Scratch Orchestra, published in 1969 by the English composer Cornelius Cardew. It will take place every day on 14, 15 and 16th February 2011, at MM centar (SC) and POGON (Zagreb Center for independent culture and youth- Mislavova 10). On 16 February, at the end of the workshop, participants will take part in an evening concert.
.
The Scratch Orchestra was founded in 1968, and grew out of classes Cornelius Cardew taught at Morley College (an adult education college in South London). Combining both trained musicians and non-musicians, the orchestra radically questioned the social limitations of art and music making as realms of specialized knowledge and experience. It not only transgressed the traditional boundaries and hierarchy separating the composer, performer, and listener, but also the boundaries dividing the realm of art into separate fields; visual and performance art were equally a part of the collective and creative experience that inspired the members of the Scratch Orchestra throughout its four-year existence.
The scores from the Nature Study Notes consist in verbal instructions leading to improvisation. No requirement is stated regarding the instrumentation: any object can thus be  conceived and used as an instrument. Prior to the workshop, participants are invited to chose and collect various objects, either for their musicality or aesthetic quality. It is important to keep in mind that producing images and sounds are equally important when performing these scores.

Everyone interested in this kind of visual/music experiment, please apply sending us e-mail by February 13th. Please write us on slobodne.veze@gmail.com
