Mediterranean Modernism Network: Lecture Series

Tamara Bjažić Klarin in conversation with architect Nebojša Weiner

The third episode from the Contretemps series will host architect Nebojsa Weiner, a protagonist of the program of Yugoslav Technical Assistance to African countries in the period 1960s- 1980s. Weiner will discuss with Tamara Bjažić Klarin, PhD. The lecture will take place on June 19, 2019, starting at 7 pm in the premises of the Association of Architects of Croatia / Zagreb Architects Associaton, Trg bana Jelačića 3/1

The authentic position of Yugoslavia in between the East and the West, that is, the affiliation to the Non-Aligned Movement enabled Croatian architects to operate on almost all continents. Nebojša Weiner took this opportunity and participated in the programs of Technical Assistance of Socialist Yugoslavia to the African countries as well as in the South Adriatic project within which he spent some time in the United States.

The first Weiner’s engagement in Africa lasted from 1965 to 1970. From the position of the architect of the Ostrogović Architectural Bureau, he goes to Ghana where he is working on the project of extension of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. The project was started in 1961 by Croatian architects Miro Marasović, Nikša Ciko and Berislav Kalogjera. Specialization in the field of school projects led Weiner back to Africa in the early 1980s, where he was involved in the making of architectural study for the Umtali  Engineering Faculty in Zimbabwe. The focus of this public interview will be on Weiner’s African experiences, but it will also open a discussion about the international position of the Yugoslav / Croatian architecture of the 1960s and 1970s emphasizing the “knowledge import and export”.

Treće događanje u ciklusu Protuvrijeme/Contretemps razgovor je s arhitektom Nebojšom Weinerom, sudionikom programa Tehničke pomoći Jugoslavije afričkim zemljama 1960-ih i 1980-ih godina. S arhitektom Weinerom razgovarat će dr.sc.

S pozicije arhitekta projektanta u Arhitektonskom birou Ostrogović odlazi u Ganu gdje radi na proširenju Sveučilišta znanosti i tehnologije Kwame Nkrumah u Kumasiju. Projekt su 1961. započeli hrvatski arhitekti Miro Marasović, Nikša Ciko i Berislav Kalođera.
